Clinician Spotlight: Rachel Spear, LMSW

We recently expanded our clinical team to welcome Rachel Spear, LMSW. Rachel brings a fresh take on group therapy to Nourish and specializes in working with adolescents. She currently runs our Adolescent DBT Skills Group and is accepting new individual clients. What is the most important thing you have learned in the last five years?

In the past five years, I have truly learned that with freedom comes responsibility, but also that with responsibility comes freedom.

What is your favorite part about working for Nourish Your Mind?

My favorite part of being on the NYM team is being surrounded by highly qualified professionals who I can learn from to help me serve clients in a more efficient way.

Tell me how you first got involved in with Social Work . . .

In my teen years, I was introduced to a social worker who I wanted to be just like when I was older. However, as I grew older, with her help, I learned that I did not want to be just like her, but instead I wanted to be just like me! Her influence in my life and identity during some of my formative years was one of my favorite parts of growing up. With social work, I hope to provide the same safe haven she did for me to help clients grow and know they are important.

What do you like most about your job?

My favorite part of my job is the privilege my clients give to me when I am able to witness a catharsis or a breakthrough. I am constantly in awe of the strength, love, and hope that comes through the office door.

What are your hopes for the future of the Mental Health Industry?

My hope for the mental health industry is that the stigma around therapy and mental illness is broken down even further in the faith that this will lead to more research done on truly how intertwined physical and mental health are.

How would you describe your therapeutic style?

My therapeutic style is client centered, committed, and respectful. I see working with clients as an honor. Each person I get to work with is important to me and I respect that every one is on his, her, or their own path.

What do you feel makes you unique as a therapist?

As a therapist, I value authenticity. Being sincere and honest with my clients enables us to work from a place we are all ready for and agree on.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

I am a really great bowler. ๐Ÿ™‚

Motto or personal mantra?

It’s not good or bad- it just is.

What are three career lessons youโ€™ve learned thus far?

Three careers lessons I have learned:

1. People aren’t broken and do not need fixing; we are whole and sometimes we just need a safe place to put down our bags.

2. Love and authenticity go a long way.

3. Every person I meet has something to teach me.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about seeking counseling for the first time?

It takes a lot of bravery to walk into therapy for the first time. If you are feeling scared, you can let your therapist know that. If the way the professional acts does not feel safe or comfortable for you, it is normal and okay to try again elsewhere until you find someone who you connect with.

What do you do when you aren’t working?

When I am not working, I am doing yoga, cooking or baking, or going for walks with my dog. ๐Ÿ™‚

What is an ability you wish you had?

I wish I could stretch the days. Sometimes 24 hours doesn’t feel like enough to soak in all I want to in this life!

If you were an animal what would you be? And why?

I have found my spirit animal through Native American tradition and I am a swan. Swans have the ability to uncover true beauty in themselves and others through assisting in healing and transformation!

What is the last joke you recall?

What’s a dog’s favorite superhero? A meatball hero!

What childrenโ€™s character can you relate with most? And why?

Lilo from Lilo & Stitch reminds me a lot of myself when I was a little girl. She is sassy and a little fiery, but has a really big heart and cares for the world around her.
