The new NYM Healing from Trauma Group begins this Wednesday, January 20 at 6:30pm in our Warwick, NY office, focusing on learning healthy coping skills:
๐Ÿ’œ gain skills to enhance self-esteem,
๐Ÿ’š gain context for experiences by sharing and hearing from others,
๐Ÿ’œ develop compassion and empathy for self and others.

๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ฒ --- Developing empathy and compassion for others can be attained by recognizing and being mindful of others' shared similarities. Mindful living consists of embracing kindness, staying in the present, and simply trying to be a better person.

Try the following mindful exercise when you find yourself having difficulty with being compassionate and empathetic, and even when you're feeling annoyed with someone:
๐Ÿ’š Look at them and say to yourself, "just like me," while thinking of ways that the person is just like you.
๐Ÿ’š Consider that they are seeking happiness and freedom from pain just like you.
๐Ÿ’š Realize that they may be flawed, imperfect, and unproductive just like you may be.

When we focus on others, our world expands, allowing our own problems to drift away and seem smaller. We can then increase our capacity for compassion, empathy, and connection.

๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐Œ๐จ๐ง๐๐š๐ฒ --- If you are feeling that conflicts between yourself and a particular person may be escalating, trying a mindful meditation may help calm turbulent waters. Rather than focusing on disagreements, or how you have been hurt, it is more productive to practice loving-kindness to show compassion to yourself and to others. Send kind sentiments and loving feelings to yourself, then to someone you care about, then to someone with who you may not be getting along.

Practicing a loving and kind mindful meditation can look like this:
โ€ข Find a comfortable space and positionโ€ฆbedtime with the lights lowered makes for a comforting place.
โ€ข Begin sending kind sentiments.
โ€ข May I be safe. May (insert name) be safe.
โ€ข May I be healthy, peaceful, and strong. May (insert name) be healthy, peaceful, and strong
โ€ข May I give and receive appreciation today. May (insert name) give and receive appreciation.
