Megan in her own words…
What is the most important thing you have learned in the last five years?
Resilience. The definition of resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. The most important thing I’ve learned about this is that it is an active pursuit and continuous effort of turning inward, listening to yourself, and identifying your own strengths and weaknesses. I believe that learning everything there is to know about who you are is one of the most empowering things you can do for yourself.
Before I firmly decided that I was going to pursue a career in mental health, I wanted to be a theater actress. I was very involved in my drama club in high school and loved to be involved in plays. I also did competitive dance outside of school. My ultimate dream was to attend a performing arts school in NYC and eventually land a part in a Broadway production. While I don’t act or perform much anymore, I still LOVE to watch musicals or Broadway shows.
How would you describe your style as a Therapist?
I’d say my style is very open and supportive. I think one of the essential parts of the therapeutic process is creating a sense of safety for my clients. When a client comes into my office they know it is a no-judgment zone but that it is also a place where I encourage them to look inward and discover the changes they would like to see happening in their lives. I also believe humor has its rightful place in therapy. I’m never afraid to laugh or crack a joke with a client.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about seeking counseling services for the first time?
Therapy IS meant to ruffle your feathers now and then. BUT it shouldn’t feel like you’ve just fought your way out of a war-zone after each session. Recognizing this and being open and honest with your therapist if you don’t feel something is a good fit is essential.
What is an ability you wish you had?
To talk to animals. I already talk at my cat Snickers enough but I wish she had the ability to respond. I always imagine what it would be like to go to a park and have a chat with a squirrel… is that weird?
What children’s character can you relate with most? And why?
I have always felt a strong relation to Anna from Frozen. She’s energetic, has this magical view of the world, and is a little bit dramatic. She encompasses the inner-child aspect of my own personality. She has a deep appreciation and loyalty to her friends and family, not to mention her willingness to jump into action when someone needs help.
